The Indian Super League (ISL) club, North East United FC, has roped in Ghana’s record goal scorer, Asamoah Gyan, for the 2019-2020 season.
Gyan, who is a free agent since August 2019, last played for the Turkish club Kayserispor. The former Ghana national team captain has appeared in four FIFA World Cups. He is the leading goal scorer from Africa at the World Cup, with six goals.
Gyan is Ghana’s most capped player and has two runners-up medals in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) adding to his prolific career. He has played club football in countries like England, Italy, France, UAE, China, Turkey with more than 400 appearances and scoring 200 goals.
“We are thrilled to have a player of Gyan’s calibre and experience join our squad. He has continuously delivered excellence at the highest levels of world football and we are confident that he will add a lot of firepower on the pitch”, said Priya Runchal, North East United FC’s executive director.
Upon signing, Gyan said, “I’m extremely excited to start this new chapter in my career. I’ve heard great things about North East United FC and the Indian Super League (ISL) and thrilled to be pat of it for the upcoming season”.
Gyan has played in Asia before, having suited up for Al-Ain in UAE and Shanghai SIPG of the Chinese Super League.
North East United have been on the lookout for a striker after Bartholomew Ogbeche's departure to the Kerala Blasters in 2019. The Nigerian scored 12 goals in 18 games for the John Abraham owned franchise in the 2018-19 season.
It must be seen whether Asamoah Gyan will live up to the expectations or not!
