Alexander Zverev vs Stefanos Tsitsipas: Italian Open Preview

Remaining on the course to win his first title of the season after overcoming Cristian Garin in the quarter-finals 7-5, 6-2, world No. 3 Alexander Zverev booked his place in the semi-final this Friday.

Proving too strong for his opponent, Zverev fired across the Grandstand Arena 24 winners and broke the Chilean four times lasting for one hour 51 minutes.

"It was a high-level match. At times it wasn't pretty tennis, but I got the job done and that is the most important thing. I am through to the semi-finals and I am happy about that," Zverev said in his on-court interview.

Garin had won the first break point of the match at 3-2, but Zverev broke through his opponent to take a 4-3 lead and afterwards closed the opening set at 7-5. 

Zverev went on to win the second set after Garin dropped his serve in the first game. The 2021 ATP Finals winner converted two of his seven break points to seize victory at 6-2.

The German levelled his head to head record with the Chilean to 1-1. 

 Zverev defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in 2017 to win the Italian Open and has won seven of his last eight matches after he reached the final at the Madrid Open last week. The second seed is yet to drop a set in Rome.

A match delay did not stop Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Open after beating home favourite Jannik Sinner 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. 

The match was stopped for 10 minutes at match point as a spectator fell ill.

Sinner battled back from three games down to level the first set 3-3 and from there on the two players kept exchanging blows with the set lasting for nearly an hour and a half. However, the Greek finally broke Sinner in the tie-breaker at 6-5, from where the Italian could not recover.

Stefanos Tsitsipas again broke Sinner in the third game of the second set. The World No. 13 had no reply and lost his serve again in the seventh game. 

The match came to a standstill at match point, when a spectator in the crowd collapsed. After the spectator was stretchered out of the centre court, Tsitsipas could finally serve his match point and a miscalculated drop shot from Jannik Sinner sent Stefanos Tsitsipas into the semi-finals.

This will be the third time in a month that Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas clash in the last four, their last clashes being in Madrid and Monte Carlo.

Tsitsipas leads the overall H2H score against Zverev with a 7-4 lead, with Zverev winning their last meeting in the Madrid Open semi-finals. 

Both players look at their top forms since the beginning of the clay court season, so it will be a match worth watching.
