Records to be broken in 2020 by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi
Most Champions League hat-tricks and top scorer for a single team are just two of the records Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could set. Both of them are most probably in the final stages of their career although, their fitness will tell you the opposite.
These two players have been recreating history again and again with some spectacular performances throughout their careers. They have been rewriting the history books as each and every year passes by, with one or the new record being broken by either of them.
Both the legends have made it so casual that people expect 50+ goals from them each season and the surprising fact is they barely fail to deliver. Ronaldo and Messi both have set their standards very high and it will take some courage, determination and a lot of guts to even come close to the levels set.
As the pair head into 2020, there have emerged new records which most probably will not remain unbroken as either Ronaldo or Messi will be about to make that record on their name. The records which could be broken this year by Cristiano or Messi are mentioned below:
1. Ronaldo: Most European Cup wins
Ronaldo won his fifth UCL with his former team Real Madrid, beating Liverpool in the 2018 final at Cardiff. If he inspires this strong Juventus side to UCL glory in 2020, he will have won Europe’s top competition as many times as the current record holder Francisco Gento, who won it six times for Real Madrid.
2. Lionel Messi: Top goal-scorer for a single team
Messi is 26 goals away from eclipsing Pele’s club goals record of 643, which the Brazilian legend has scored for the club Santos. Messi is set to hit a new high that will take some beating.
3. Ronaldo: All-time top European Championship goal-scorer
Ronaldo has fired nine goals for Portugal at the four European Championships where he represented his country as the captain, equalling Michel Platini as the competition’s leading scorer. A goal in the 2020 Euros will make him the leading Euros marksman of all time.
4. Messi and Ronaldo: Most Champions League hat-tricks
Messi and Ronaldo have scored eight hat-tricks each in the Champions League that is more than any other player to have graced the competition. One more hat-trick for either of them and they could claim the bragging rights for some time.
5. Ronaldo: First player to be top scorer in English, Spanish and Italian top flights.
Ronaldo is currently joint-fourth in the Serie A scoring charts with 10 goals behind Joao Pedro (11), Romelu Lukaku (12) and Ciro Immobile (17). Ending the charts as the top scorer in 2020 will make him the first player in history to become the top goal-scorer in the English, Spanish and Italian top flight.
6. Messi: Seven Ballon d’Or wins
Messi is leading with the Ballon d’Or award with six of them, one ahead of his fierce rival CR7. Another one in 2020 would make it very difficult for Ronaldo to catch him.
7. Ronaldo: All-time international top-scorer
Ronaldo will be going all guns blazing this year for his national side as he attempts to break Ali Daei’s record of 109. Ronaldo is scoring at a storming rate currently with 99 international goals and a super succesfull Euros could make him the top international marksman of all time.
8. Messi: Four consecutive Golden Boot awards
Messi has been the top goal-scorer in Europe for the last three consecutive seasons and he currently leads the La Liga scoring with 13 goals. He was the first player to do it three times and could establish another new record with four times on the bounce.
